Cliche Love

Nov 8, 2023

I was sitting in the student lounge talking to a friend about nothing.  Or, maybe I was staring at the wall. Or, something like that.  And, out of the blue comes this tall, attractive brunette.
“Something in the way she moves
Attracts me like no other lover.”
Well, she had me at hello. We talked for a while.  I can’t really say I remember the conversation.  But, you know they say?  Everything happens for a reason.

I don’t really know what we talked about. Back in those days, my brain and sex drive were just intertwined.
Somewhere in her smile she knows
That I don’t need no other lover.
After a while I asked her if she wanted to come to my class.  She politely declined.  Well, that was that ..
That was all .. that was it?… was it finished?

Or, so I thought.  Until I found her outside my classroom,,,  So, I said to myself, this looks like something big is going to happen.

Could it be?
Who knows?
There’s something due any day
I will know, right away
Soon as it shows …

But, I was shy.  Until she said, Keep calm and kiss me.  Well, uh .. gee .. that was pretty good.

Oh yeah, I’ll tell you something
I think you’ll understand
When I’ll say that something
I want to hold your hand

The next thing you know we had our first date.  I invited her to my empty apartment.  Both of my roommates had recently moved out.
As it turned out, I didn’t have to worry about finding the right words.  We just … jumped into action. And, as they said in Ferris Buhler, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

The only thing in the apartment was … my bed. I didn’t exactly know what to say.  “The first thirty seconds of any conversation or presentation are like the last two minutes of a football game. This is when victory or defeat is determined, the period of time when your audience is deciding whether you are interesting enough for them to continue paying attention. Say just the right thing, and the communication game is yours. Your audience gets hooked, and they’re enticed to hear what you will say next. Get it wrong, and your listeners start daydreaming, checking their smartphones, or plotting their conversational exit strategy.”

Well,  one thing led to another.  We dated a few more times and then we moved in together.

Me and you and you and me
No matter how they toss the dice, it had to be
The only one for me is you, and you for me
So happy together.

First it was with her two nursing student roommates in a one bedroom apartment.  Yeah, that lasted about a month.  And, then we moved into a hippy commune.

To everything (turn, turn, turn)
There is a season (turn, turn, turn)
And a time to every purpose, under heaven

And, then to our own apartment in NYC.

Some folks like to get away
Take a holiday from the neighborhood
Hop a flight to Miami Beach or to Hollywood
But I’m takin’ a Greyhound on the Hudson River line
I’m in a New York state of mind.

And, then to Staten Island where I went to finish my undergraduate degree in Sociology and Filmmaking.

We moved into another hippy commune.  I drove a cab.  I smoked some pot.  I graduated and took a job producing street festivals and ferry concerts.

And, then we got married.  The Sicilians came.  The Jews came.  The old friends came.  The hippies came.  It was a love fest of the first order.

Love and marriage, love and marriage
It’s an institute you can’t disparage
Ask the local gentry
And they will say it’s elementary
